Minted by Republic Metals Corporation, each round contains one ounce of 99.9% fine silver in a remarkable proof-like finish. Unlike coins, rounds like this one are not considered legal tender and therefore do not have a specific face value. Silver rounds are increasingly popular with bullion investors and the Indian Nickel Head design is one of the most sought after U.S. rounds. The original Indian Head Nickel was produced between 1913 and 1938 and was originally composed of 75% copper and 25% nickel. The coin was designed by James Earle Fraser, who studied under the distinguished sculptor, Augustus Saint-Gaudens. A native of Winona, Minnesota, Fraser took much of the inspiration for the design from the rolling hills and surrounding prairies where he grew up. In June 2015, Republic Metals announced the addition of this round to its portfolio of silver bullion products. When the original Indian Head Nickel was first released, Fraser shared that he wanted to create a coin that was uniquely American. Both the reverse and obverse side of the round portray classic symbols of the American West and represent an important part of America’s history. The reverse side of the round features a left profile of an American buffalo with its head tilted downward, grazing peacefully on a plot of land. The detailed design shows the buffalo’s broad woolly chest, muscular haunches, and gently flicking tail. It’s been said that sculptor James Earle Fraser modeled this buffalo after ‘Black Diamond’, a bison that once resided in the Central Park Zoo in New York City. “ONE TROY OUNCE” is etched over the back of the buffalo at the top rim of the coin and the round’s metal content, “.999 SILVER” is engraved below the buffalo’s feet. The name, Indian Head Nickel, originates from the reverse side of the round as it shows a right profile of a stoic Native American chieftain gazing into the distance. The intricate details of his lined face and feathers tucked into his hair imply that he is a wizened, yet respected leader. “LIBERTY” is engraved just to the left of his head and Republic Metal’s mintmark can be seen at the bottom of the coin below the chieftain’s neck. The Silver Buffalo Rounds are 39.04 mm in diameter and 2.9 mm thick. They are IRA eligible and a simple way for investors to own an iconic piece of art in bullion form.
