2024 Royal Mint 10 oz Tudor Dragon Silver Coin is guaranteed legal tender by the British government, the 10-ounce coin holds a face value of 10 pounds.
The reverse design displays the Red Dragon of Wales and was adopted by the Tudor dynasty as a symbol of their Welsh heritage. The design by David Lawrence captures the historic Tudor Dragon seated with wings raised back and its claws clutching a shield embellished with the Beaufort Portcullis. On the coin’s obverse is the first ever portrait of Charles III to appear on British coins, and was created by Martin Jennings.
The Red Dragon of Wales is one of the ten heraldic creatures that stand guard over the moat outside Hampton Court Palace in the form of fearsome statues. Embodying the strength of the Tudor dynasty, they symbolise the ancestry of Henry VIII. The tradition of mythical beasts representing the values and traits of a kingdom began centuries earlier, when heraldic creatures appeared on flags and banners on the battlefield to unite and direct armies and strike fear into the enemy.
